Notes and Tips

  • This pattern is written using US crochet terms
  • The number in (parentheses) at the end of each row is the stitch count after finishing that row
  • Change colors by pulling the new color through the last two loops of the last double crochet in the old color
  • The chain 2 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a double crochet
  • The slip stitch at the end of each round goes into the first stitch of that round
  • The first cluster of every new round goes into the space right at the base of the turning chain
  • The first space of the round is also the last space of that round

Round 6: ch2, dc3 into sp below, *rep[ch1, dc3 into next sp] 4 times, ch1,** [dc3, ch2, dc3] in next sp, rep from * 3 more times ending last rep at **, dc3 into last sp, ch2, sl st (24 cl)

Carry color B working yarn in your last cluster. Switch to color B with the last double crochet. Cut color A, unless you want a bigger square.

Round 7: ch2, dc3 into sp below, *rep[ch1, dc3 into next sp] 5 times, ch1,** [dc3, ch2, dc3] in next sp, rep from * 3 more times ending last rep at **, dc3 into last sp, ch2, sl st (28 cl)

Note: For a larger bag, add more rounds by repeating the previous round, but with one extra rep[ch1, dc3 into next sp]. For example, Round 9 will rep[ch1, dc3 into next sp] 7 times instead of 6 times.

Fasten off with a 180cm (71″) long loose end for sewing all the squares together.

pi 1.94.1

Make 2 more granny squares, but start with color B instead of A, and fasten off with a regular length tail.

pi 1.107.1

Assembly

Rotate your first square so the long loose end is in the top-right corner. Place it below one of your other squares.

pi 1.115.1

Whip stitch across, connecting each space and stitch along the side they touch.

Place your last square to the left of your first square and rotate everything so it’s now above the first square. Whip stitch across.

Rotate everything to make a V shape and flip it over.

Fold each square diagonally in half towards the center.

Using the rest of the long loose end, continue to sew along the sides that touch each other. Tie a knot to secure the seam.

Strap

With color A, make a slipknot with a 25cm (10″) long tail, ch65

Note: For a shorter strap, do fewer chains. For a longer strap, do more chains.

pi 1.147.1

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (64)

pi 1.13.1

Rows 2-4: ch1, turn, sc across (64)

Fasten off with a 25cm (10″) long tail.

pi 1.15.1

Attaching Strap to Bag

With the long tail end left on one end of the strap, sew that side to one of the ch2-sp at the top of the bag. Sew the other side of the strap to the other ch2-sp at the top of the bag using the other tail end. Make sure the strap isn’t twisted.
