- The number in (parentheses) at the end of each row is the stitch count after finishing that row
- The starting chain at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a stitch
- The slip stitch at the end of each round goes into the first stitch of that round
- The first stitch of Rounds 3 and 4 goes into the stitch at the base of the starting chain
Crochet Star Granny Square Pattern
Star Appliqué
Foundation: With your star color yarn, make a magic ring or make a slipknot, ch4, sl st to 1st ch to form a ring
Round 1: ch2, dc10 into ring, sl st (10)

Round 2: rep[ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc, dc, tr, sk2, sl st] 5 times (20)
The sc, hdc, dc, and tr go into the chains to form a triangle. Then, skip the stitch at the base of the triangle and the next stitch, and slip stitch into the next stitch (see first image below).
The final slip stitch of the round will go into the same stitch as the slip stitch from Round 1.
Fasten off.

Forming Circle Around the Star
Now, we have the 5 points of the star. For Round 3, we will work the same set of 8 stitches in each space between the points. We will work into both the top and bottom of the stitches from Round 2.
Attach your base color yarn to the top of any single crochet from Round 2.
Note: The first stitch of Round 3 is worked into the stitch at the base of the starting chain.
Round 3: ch1, rep[sc, dc, tr, dtr, dtr, tr, dc, sc] 5 times, sl st (40)

Forming Square
Note: The first stitch of Round 4 is worked into the stitch at the base of the starting chain.
Round 4: ch2, rep{dc in next 2 st, hdc in next 2 st, sc, hdc in next 2 st, dc in next 2 st, [tr2, ch2, tr2] in next st} 4 times, sl st (52)
Fasten off.
