Crochet Flower Granny Square | Free Pattern & Video Tutorial
This crochet flower granny square has a little 3D popcorn flower in the center. You can make the flower on its own or make the granny square and turn it into a larger project, such as a pouch or a tote. It’s also perfect for yarn scraps because it uses very little yarn and has 3 different color possibilities.
Advanced Beginner Crochet Project
This flower granny square uses the typical techniques for a solid granny square, which beginners may be familiar with. However, it also has a special stitch: the popcorn stitch. This stitch might be difficult for beginners, but with the help of the video tutorial and maybe a little determination, anyone can make this flower granny square!
Sizing
With the yarn and hook I’m using, the crochet popcorn flower turned out to be 5.5 centimeters wide. Then, I did 3 rounds of the square, which made my square 10.5 centimeters by 10.5 centimeters. You can add as many rounds for the square as you want.

Materials
- 15 grams of medium weight yarn (Re-Up in “Mineral Springs” & “Surf Spray” and Big Twist Favorite Cotton in “Cream“)
- 4.5mm Clover Amour crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Tension ring (optional)
- Yarn bowl (optional)

10.5 centimeters wide x 10.5 centimeters long (4.1 x 4.1 inches)
Notes and Tips
- This pattern is written using US crochet terms
- The chain 2 at the beginning of each row/round does NOT count as a double crochet
- Each popcorn stitch has two stitches at the top. For round 3, we’ll work into each of these stitches
- Carry the loose ends in your stitches to avoid having to weave them in later on
How to Crochet the Popcorn Stitch
- Do 4 double crochets into the same stitch.
- Remove your hook from the loop (you can hold it on your finger to keep it from unraveling).
- Insert your hook into the first double crochet made.
- Place the loop back on your hook and tighten it.
- Pull through the stitch.
- Chain 1 to lock it in.

ch-sp = chain-space
dc = double crochet

Crochet Popcorn Flower
Foundation: With color A, make a magic ring or make a slipknot, ch4, sl st to 1st ch to form a ring
If it’s hard to fit round 1 in the ring with 4 chains, try chaining 5 instead.
Round 1: ch2, dc12 into ring, switch to color B with last st, sl st (12)
Close the hole in the center by pulling on the loose end at the center. Cut color A, leaving a 10cm loose end. Double knot it with color B’s loose end to secure them.
Round 2: ch2, PC around, sl st, switch to color C (12 petals)
Forming Square Around Flower
Each popcorn stitch has 2 stitches that we will work into. The first is from when we pull the loop through the 1st double crochet. The second one is from the chain 1 right after. It can be a little tight to work directly into the chain, so we will go into the bigger space under it. View the video tutorial to see it more clearly.
Round 3: ch2, rep[dc, hdc, sc in next 2 st, hdc, dc, ch2] around, sl st (6 st on each side of square, ch2 in each corner)
Round 4: ch2, dc2 in ch-sp below, *dc in each of next 6 st, [dc2, ch2, dc2] in ch-sp,* rep between ** 3 more times, but only [dc2, ch2] in last ch-sp, sl st (10 st on each side of square, ch2 in each corner)
Round 5: ch2, dc2 in ch-sp below, *dc in each of next 10 st, [dc2, ch2, dc2] in ch-sp,* rep between ** 3 more times, but only [dc2, ch2] in last ch-sp, sl st (14 st on each side of square, ch2 in each corner)
Fasten off.
