Notes and Tips
- This pattern is written using US crochet terms
- The number in (parentheses) at the end of each row is the stitch count after finishing that row
- Italicized notes tell you what to change to adjust the size
- Change colors by pulling the new color through the loop on your hook
- The chain 1 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a single crochet
- The slip stitch at the end of each round goes into the first stitch of that round
- The slip stitch at the start of each round goes into the next stitch after the previous slip stitch
- The bigger the star is, the more the arms start to twist. You’ll either need to block it or adjust the pattern to turn after every round
Radiating Crochet Star Pattern
Foundation: Make a magic ring (or make a slipknot, ch4, sl st to 1st ch to form a ring)
Round 1: ch1, sc5 into ring, sl st, switch colors (5)

Round 2: ch1, [sc2, ch2, sc2] in each st around, sl st, switch colors (20 sc, 5 ch-sp)

Round 3: sl st, ch1, *sc, [sc2, ch2, sc2] in next ch-sp, sc, sk2, rep from * around, sl st, switch colors (30 sc, 5 ch-sp)

Round 4: sl st, ch1, *sc in next 2 st, [sc2, ch2, sc2] in next ch-sp, sc in next 2 st, sk2, rep from * around, sl st, switch colors (40 sc, 5 ch-sp)

Next, we’ll do an “increase” round to add 20 more stitches instead of just 10, so we can keep it flat.
Round 5: sl st, ch1, *sc2 in next st, sc in next 2 st, [sc2, ch2, sc2] in next ch-sp, sc in next 2 st, sc2 in next st, sk2, rep from * around, sl st, switch colors (60 sc, 5 ch-sp)

Round 6: sl st, ch1, *sc in next 5 st, [sc2, ch2, sc2] in next ch-sp, sc in next 5 st, sk2, rep from * around, sl st, switch colors (70 sc, 5 ch-sp)
Note: Fasten off for a typical coaster size or continue for a larger star.

Round 7: sl st, ch1, *sc in next 6 st, [sc2, ch2, sc2] in next ch-sp, sc in next 6 st, sk2, rep from * around, sl st, switch colors (80 sc, 5 ch-sp)
Next, we’ll do another “increase” round to keep it laying flat.
Round 8: sl st, ch1, *sc2 in next st, sc in next 6 st, [sc2, ch2, sc2] in next ch-sp, sc in next 6 st, sc2 in next st, sk2, rep from * around, sl st, switch colors (100 sc, 5 ch-sp)
Round 9: sl st, ch1, *sc in next 9 st, [sc2, ch2, sc2] in next ch-sp, sc in next 9 st, sk2, rep from * around, sl st (110 sc, 5 ch-sp)

You can continue adding rounds following this pattern to make the star bigger. Note that you may need to add increase rounds to keep it flat and the bigger the star is, the more the arms start to twist. You’ll either need to block it or adjust the pattern to turn after every round.
